Aim:
To introduce
and develop skill in Batik, a technique that dates back
to Early Egyptian Art.
Materials:
brown paper bags; crayons; India ink and pen; paint;
iron
Motivation:
- Show examples of Early
Egyptian Art and Batiks
- Discuss "crackle" effect
and how it is achieved
- Discuss dye (paint)
techniques
- Discuss etching lines in
Batiking and how ink pens achieve that
quality
Objectives:
- To integrate subject
areas
- To explore art from a
past culture
- To achieve a "timeworn"
quality unique to the Batik process
Plans:
- Using brown paper bags,
draw Egyptian motifs
- Use crayons to color
motifs with bright colors
- Outline motifs with black
ink, etching lines into the paper
- Crumble paper several
times
- Cover paper with desired
paint color
- Wash paint off under
running water (paint will remain in cracks where paper
had been wrinkled)
- Place paper (face down)
on a flat surface and iron the back of the paper while
it is still wet

Evaluation:
Students create a
work of art that reinterprets the style of a work of art
from an ancient culture. Students demonstrate the ability
to utilize the process of Batik to create a timeworn
effect.

This lesson meets the

variety of sources for developing and conveying ideas,
images, themes, symbols and events in the creation of
art; Visual Arts Standard 2, as students look at original
art and increase their understanding of art; Visual Arts

evaluate works of art, using the language of art
criticism; Visual Arts Standard 4, as students
demonstrate how art and artifacts from diverse world
cultures reflect aspects of those
cultures.
