Aim:
To allow students to integrate art and technolgy in the
process of creating a textile pattern
Materials:
Art Supplies:
pencil; white drawing paper
(12"x18"); tracing paper; colored pencils; magazine
photographs; razor blades or scissors; glue sticks
Technology Requirements:
computer; scanner; color
printer; Photoshop 5.0 or higher; Painter 5.5 or
higher
Motivation:
1. Students discuss textile design and places where
it can be found - ( CLOTHING and HOME FURNISHINGS
)
2. Show examples of finished designs and
computerized applications done by former
students.
3. Discuss the use of computers in enabling us to
"miniaturize", "repeat" and apply our original patterns
to a real model and an actual end use.
Objectives:
1. To create an original pattern / layout for use
on clothing or home furnishing fabric...
2. To learn to scan and digitize original design
for purpose of manipulating on computer...
A. To use software to miniaturize, repeat and then
print pattern for application on photo model...
3. To enable students to see the end results and
practical application of their artwork, as it applies to
the professional world of art and design.
4. To understand concepts of good design:
(A) layout
(B) appropriate choice of subject matter for end
use
(C) color look and how it is rendered (applied) for
end use
Process:
1. Students choose subject motifs (from teacher's
files) that would be appropriate for a particular end
use.......clothing (children or adult) or home furnishing
2. Create pencil rubbings of motifs (on tracing
paper)
3. Use rubbings to transfer motifs to drawing paper
creating an "all over" tossed design
4. Render design in colored pencils
5. Scan finished artwork into Photoshop:

6. In the scanning software, set a
resolution of 200 and choose....
millions of colors.

7. Once you've got your scanned image, reduce
it in size to approximately
1.5" X 2.25" (go to Menu Item - IMAGE >
IMAGE SIZE).
8. SAVE and NAME the image as a
TIFF file in a desktop folder called
PATTERNS

9. Open the program PAINTER and from
the menu item FILE > OPEN,
open your saved image and make sure to SELECT
it........
(menu item.....SELECT > ALL)
10. Go to the ART MATERIALS palette and
scroll down to (and click on) the
word PATTERNS. From the dropdown menu
choose........
CAPTURE PATTERN. In the dialog box that opens,
choose
RECTANGULAR TILE and a BIAS of
50%.

11. Now create an 8X10 new, blank page (menu
item....FILE > NEW)
on which you'll be placing your "captured pattern". The
resolution of this
page should be 200 - the same as the original
scanned image.

12. In the menu, under EFFECTS, choose
FILL. Your captured pattern
repeats itself over and over again to fill the whole
page.
13. Save this file as a TIFF and name it
differently from your original
file.

14. Back in PHOTOSHOP - - open this
saved image and from this
program you can print out pages of the pattern in
repeat.
15. Choose photograph (magazine) to apply printed
pattern to
16. Trace, cut and paste sections of printout to
fit photo model

Assessment:
Students display
their finished patterns and application of patterns and
then have an open discussion of each others projects in
terms of:
1. Is the design successful
in terms of its layout, spacing, and
color?
2. How appropriate is the
pattern in suiting its end use?
3. How have the advantages of
using computer technology added to the completion of this
project?
N. Y. S. ART STANDARDS:
This lesson meets
criteria for:
Visual Arts Standard 1:
- Students used a
variety of art materials, processes, media and
techniques.
Visual Arts Standard
2: Students learn to
use computer technology in the artroom by integrating
available resources.
Visual Arts Standard
3: Students respond
to and analyze each others work using appropriate
crtitcal language, based on their understanding of the
objectives of the project
Visual Arts Standard
4. Students develop
an understanding of their art as it is applied to the
real world of design and its necessary social and
cultural requirements.
