Henry Street Settlement introduced our students to a professional songwriter, composer, performer and recording artist, Tom Rossi. In an African drum, dance and song workshop Tom taught our students the fundamental elements of African musical culture.

The students learned a specific form of village social music called "Kpanlogo". They played drums, percussion , sang and danced in the tradition of the Ga people of Ghana, West africa. The material was conveyed through demonstration and musical notation, along with contemporary references to illustrate a parallel to the children's own culture.

Communication, respect, appreciation, listening and self-expression were important social aspects that became an integral part of the class. By the end of the workshop the students were able to create a well rounded traditional African dance party as well as have a deeper understanding of being part of a community of world culture - its rhythm, music, dance and song.
